A grinder is an electrically powered machine that is used solely for the purpose of grinding a work piece. It grinds the work piece through abrasion. There are various kinds of grinders. These machines include the belt grinders, bench grinder, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, tool and cutter grinder, jig grinder, angle grinder etc. High precision grinders do not require coolants, as the temperature raised is quite low.

Belt grinder is used as a method to process metals and other metal like materials, with the help of coated abrasives. Belt grinding is a process suitable for all kind of general applications like finishing and removal of stock. Bench grinders comprise of two wheels of varying grain sizes for roughing and finishing. They are basically used for shaping tool bits, making new tools as well as repairing the old ones. They are operated manually. Cylindrical grinder incorporates a center-less grinder and may possess multiple grinding wheels. Belt Grinders are used to make materials such as precision rods. A surface grinder involves use of a magnet. Tool and Cutter grinder performs function of a drill bit grinders. Lastly, Jig grinder has a variety of uses but grinding holes and pins is the primary function of a jig grinder.
